WSL Roundup: Manchester City Maintain Perfect Start as London City Lionesses Beat Brighton
Defending champions Manchester City maintained their perfect start to the Women's Super League season with a hard-fought 1-0 win over newly promoted Charlton Athletic.
Alex Greenwood's superb free-kick 10 minutes before half-time proved decisive as City made it four league wins from four. Despite dominating possession and registering 19 shots, the champions were unable to add a second goal, with Charlton goalkeeper Sophie Whitehouse making several important saves.
City made six changes to their starting XI, with Khadija Shaw and Lauren Hemp among those rested, but still controlled much of the contest. Charlton threatened on the counter, though City held on to claim their first clean sheet of the campaign.
Elsewhere, London City Lionesses continued their excellent start with a 2-0 win over Brighton, moving second in the WSL.
Alexia Putellas opened her English account in the 29th minute with a composed finish from the edge of the box. Brighton hit the crossbar through Emily Murphy as they searched for a response, but London City remained in control before Lucia Corrales sealed the victory in the 92nd minute.
The result gave London City their third win in four league matches, moving them three points behind leaders Manchester City, while Brighton remain winless with two points from their opening four games.
