Samu Aghehowa Returns for Porto After 223-Day ACL Recovery
Porto striker Samu Aghehowa is back in action after a long, difficult road to recovery from a serious knee injury, making his return during the closing stages of the club's Clássico against Benfica.
The 22-year-old, born in Melilla, ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee back in February, an injury that cut short a strong run of form and kept him out for more than seven months. Reflecting on the moment he stepped back onto the pitch, Aghehowa shared an emotional message on Instagram.
"223 days later.. back to the place where I always wanted to be. Thanks to God for sustaining me during this difficult path," he wrote, clearly moved by the reception at the Estádio do Dragão. "Thanks to my family, my friends and to all the Porto fans for all the love and support that I have received during these months!"
The post received a warm response from former teammates, including Roma's Rodrigo Mora, who commented: "You've truly earned this, brother," a sign of how highly Aghehowa is still regarded by those he's played alongside.
Porto manager Francesco Farioli was full of praise for the medical staff who helped get his striker back to fitness, especially given the club has managed to stay unbeaten without him, winning all seven of their opening league fixtures to sit top of the Primeira Liga.
"The fact that we have Samu back says a lot, and Samu was there congratulating the entire medical and performance department. We are a team that needs everyone," Farioli said after the 3-1 win over Benfica. "Unfortunately, we played many months without him and we know how much we missed him. We are very happy to have him back and now it is time to try to recover those who have been out in recent days."
Getting back into the starting XI won't be straightforward for Aghehowa, though. While he was recovering, Porto strengthened their attacking options by signing Mexican international Santi Gimenez and former AC Milan forward Andre Silva, meaning he'll now have to fight for his place through training performances and substitute opportunities.
There's also a bigger prize on Aghehowa's mind beyond club football. His injury came at a particularly cruel time, ruling him out of contention for Luis de la Fuente's Spain squad ahead of the World Cup. If he can rediscover the goalscoring form that once made him one of the most sought-after young strikers in Europe, a recall to the national team setup may not be too far off.
