Palmer's England Commitment Questioned After Latest Squad Withdrawal

Cole Palmer is facing heavy criticism over his commitment to the England national team after withdrawing from Thomas Tuchel's latest squad, despite playing a full 90 minutes for Chelsea just days earlier.

Palmer had been recalled for England's upcoming Nations League fixtures against Spain, Czechia and Croatia, marking his first call-up since missing out on the 2026 World Cup squad. But he pulled out citing injury issues, a decision that raised eyebrows given he'd completed the full match in Chelsea's 3-0 defeat to Brentford on Friday.

The backlash was swift. Palmer is one of five players to withdraw from the camp, alongside Declan Rice and Kobbie Mainoo, with Morgan Gibbs-White and James Garner called up as replacements. The timing of his withdrawal in particular has frustrated fans and media alike.

Broadcaster Adrian Durham didn't hold back when discussing the situation on talkSPORT.

"I am starting to question Cole Palmer's commitment to England," Durham said. "14 caps, two goals. He's played in one World Cup qualifier in his career, and in that he was awful away to Andorra [in June 2025]. He's played five times for England since the Euros when he scored in the final. England have had 28 games since the Euro final in 2024 [vs Spain]."

While acknowledging that injuries are a genuine part of football, Durham argued that playing just five of a possible 28 matches since the Euros raises real questions about how much Palmer wants to be involved with the national team long-term.

He went further, calling for Palmer to be upfront about where he stands.

"I'm questioning his commitment to England. Does he really want to play for England? If you don't, tell the world you don't want to play for England," Durham said. "Because just picking and choosing when you want to play for England is actually disrupting other number 10s like [Nottingham Forest's] Morgan Gibbs-White, like [Fulham's] Josh King, who might want to play for England. So let's have it from Cole Palmer. Do you want to play for England or do you not want to play for England?"

Fellow talkSPORT presenter Jamie O'Hara echoed the sentiment, suggesting Palmer should have travelled to the camp regardless of medical advice.

England will now head into their Nations League fixtures without Palmer, leaning on the newly called-up replacements instead. Palmer, meanwhile, will stay behind at Cobham to recover during the international break, with his focus turning to Chelsea's next Premier League fixture. His standing with the national team setup, though, remains firmly under the microscope.
