Silva Speaks Out Against Ancelotti's Rebuilding Plans for Brazil

Thiago Silva has openly disagreed with Carlo Ancelotti's approach to reshaping the Brazilian national team as the manager sets his sights on the 2030 World Cup.

Following Brazil's round of 16 exit at this year's tournament, Ancelotti said he wanted to begin a "new cycle" built around younger players.

Silva addressed those comments directly ahead of Brazil's squad reveal for upcoming friendlies against Australia and India. In an interview with Radio Tupi, picked up by GloboEsporte, the veteran defender did not mince his words.

"Do you want me to lie or tell the truth? You can't rule out players who are 31, 32 or 33," he said. "I almost went to the World Cup at 41. You can't rule out players who are in good form."

Now with Fluminense, Silva is set to turn 42 later this month. He led Brazil as captain at both the 2018 and 2022 World Cups, and despite a strong loan spell at FC Porto last season, he was overlooked for this year's squad.

With 113 international caps under his belt, Silva argues that a full rebuild is not something Brazil can rush into.

"With the Brazilian national team, things have to be done gradually," he said. "You can't just get rid of everyone and bring in new players. It has to be done step by step. It's very difficult to be a Brazilian national team player; it's very different from club football."

He went on to suggest the pressures of international football with Brazil differ sharply from what Ancelotti experienced managing clubs in Europe.

"He comes from European football, where it's easier to make changes. It doesn't work like that here. You need to adapt and deliver results. And, if possible, play well," Silva said. "I don't like this sort of change. I don't agree with it, but he's the one in charge."

This summer's tournament ended in Brazil's worst World Cup showing since they were eliminated in the group stage back in 1966.

Ancelotti extended his contract with Brazil's football federation through 2029 earlier this year, having taken the job in May 2025 after leaving Real Madrid. Brazil are set to play two matches in Australia later this month, followed by a trip to Calcutta to face India on October 3.
