Bayern Chief Eberl Criticises Neuer After Augsburg Draw
Bayern Munich sporting director Max Eberl has said Manuel Neuer made a risky decision that led to the fastest goal in Bundesliga history in Bayern's 2-2 draw with Augsburg.
Luis Diaz kicked off, and the ball was played back to Neuer. The goalkeeper struggled to control it and Augsburg's Robin Fellhauer pounced to score. The goal was timed at just over eight seconds, beating the old record of nine seconds, which Kevin Volland and Karim Bellarabi shared.
"He made a mistake, took the ball poorly, then he wanted to solve it and solved it too riskily," Eberl said. He later added: "We all know, you rarely see that from Manuel Neuer." He then said: "I don't know his 800 or more competitive games and I don't know if he has made bigger blunders there."
Eberl was clear that the blame did not rest on one man. "We made life difficult for ourselves with a series of mistakes. Manu is involved in that, but others are too," he told Sky Sports. He said Bayern should still have won. "We had enough chances to win the game anyway."
Fellhauer admitted he could have been even quicker. "I could have shot even faster. But the risk was too great that it would go wide," he told reporters.
The slip is rare for the 40-year-old, who joined Bayern from Schalke in 2011. He has won the Bundesliga 13 times, the DFB-Pokal six times, and both the Champions League and Club World Cup twice. He has made 604 appearances for the club and kept 272 clean sheets.
