Hincapie Doubtful for Lille Clash After Ankle Injury in Arsenal's Win Over Leeds
Arsenal defender Piero Hincapie is a doubt for Tuesday's Champions League game against Lille after he was carried off with an ankle injury following the 2-1 win over Leeds United.
According to BBC reporter Sami Mokbel, the 22-year-old was carried off clutching his right ankle. The injury happened during the warm-down routines that substitutes and fringe players do after the game. Hincapie had only come on as a late substitute against Daniel Farke's side, but the extra running after the final whistle proved his undoing.
It took the shine off a good night for Arsenal, who moved level on points with Manchester City at the top of the Premier League. Reports say Hincapie will now have scans to find out how bad the damage is.
It is the latest setback for the former Bayer Leverkusen defender. He missed the last international break with a muscle problem and was also absent for the League Cup tie against Ipswich Town on September 15. He had only recently returned to the first-team picture.
The timing is awkward for Mikel Arteta. Arsenal won the title last season on the back of a solid defence, but they have already let in five goals in their first six league games this term.
If Hincapie misses the Lille game, more pressure falls on Riccardo Calafiori. The Italian scored the equaliser against Leeds and leads all Premier League defenders in goal involvements this season. However, there is little natural cover behind him at left-back, which is a risk for Arteta.
