CAS to Rule on Senegal's AFCON Title Appeal by End of November
The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) says it expects to rule on Senegal's appeal over the Africa Cup of Nations title by the end of November.
A CAS panel has started its deliberations after a closed-door hearing at its headquarters in Lausanne on Oct. 8. It said it will issue a full ruling with legal grounds, known as a CAS Award. "This process will require several weeks, with the CAS Award expected at the end of November 2026," the court said.
Senegal are challenging a Confederation of African Football (CAF) appeal ruling from March, which stunned the football world. It turned a 1-0 win for Senegal on the pitch into a 3-0 win for Morocco by default, handing Morocco the title.
The final was played in January, with Senegal beating hosts Morocco. It was held up for 15 minutes after Senegal's players walked off in protest when Morocco were given a penalty in the last minute of regulation time. Fans also clashed at the end of normal time, with Senegal supporters furious about the decision.
The referee eventually got the game going again. Morocco's penalty was saved and Senegal scored the only goal in extra time. The Laws of the Game say a referee's decisions are final.
