Premier League Saturday Roundup: Spurs Stun Chelsea, Arsenal and Villa Win, City Lose
Tottenham beat Chelsea 2-0 at Stamford Bridge for only their second Premier League victory at the ground in 36 years, while Arsenal moved level on points with Manchester City at the top of the table after beating Everton 2-0.
Spurs Win at Stamford Bridge as Chelsea Lose Palmer and Their Way
Tottenham beat Chelsea 2-0 at Stamford Bridge on Saturday night, taking only their second Premier League win at the ground in 36 years. The home side played the last stretch with ten men after Cole Palmer was sent off.
Chelsea keeper Mike Penders gave Spurs the lead in the 77th minute, punching a corner into his own net while under pressure from Jan Paul van Hecke. Palmer was shown a second yellow card in the 80th minute and walked off. Mathys Tel then sealed it in the 87th with a low shot from 25 yards, finishing a solo run that began near the halfway line.
Palmer’s night was ugly. He was booked for barging into Mateus Fernandes, then picked up his second yellow for a late tackle on Conor Gallagher. Both bookings came within nine minutes, either side of Spurs’ opening goal. It was the England midfielder’s first red card as a pro, and it rules him out of Wednesday’s Carabao Cup last-16 tie at Liverpool. The game was played in heavy rain and got feisty, as London derbies tend to.
The result was Chelsea’s first home league loss of the season under Xabi Alonso. A win would have put them level on points with third-placed Brighton. Alonso said afterwards that he wanted more intensity from his players.
Chelsea had the better chances while the game was goalless, but Spurs keeper Antonin Kinsky saved well from Palmer, Jordan Henderson and Pedro Neto. Penders was making his first league start because Emi Martinez broke his jaw against Everton. He made good saves from Omar Marmoush and Tel before his costly mistake, and he may feel he could have done more on the second goal too. Chelsea also missed the injured Joao Pedro. Morgan Rogers struggled as a false nine, and 19-year-old Geovany Quenda, who cost around £40m from Sporting in the summer, made little impact in his first league start.
Spurs climbed to 12th, their highest spot since early January. They have now won twice in a week, following their first league win of the season, a 3-1 home victory over Coventry City on Monday. Tottenham controlled the game with 68.5% of the ball and had 15 shots to Chelsea’s seven, although each side put four on target.
The win was a surprise given how Spurs usually fare in west London. They had taken just one win from their previous 36 league trips to Stamford Bridge, with 11 draws and 24 defeats. That one win came on 1 April 2018, a 3-1 victory under Mauricio Pochettino. Before that, they had to go back to 10 February 1990, when Terry Venables’ side won 2-1.
There was bad news for Spurs, though. James Maddison, who scored against Coventry in his first start since May 2025 after a serious knee injury, lasted only five minutes of the second half before limping off. Spurs will hope it is not serious ahead of their home derby against Crystal Palace next Saturday.

Aston Villa ended Manchester City’s perfect start with a 2-1 win in the lunchtime game. Nicolas Jackson scored twice for Villa, including the winner, while Erling Haaland briefly levelled things for City. It was City’s first league defeat of the season.

Arsenal took full advantage, beating Everton 2-0 at the Emirates to pull level with City on points at the top. Ezri Konsa scored his first Arsenal goal in the seventh minute, bundling in a corner at the back post. Gabriel Magalhaes made it two in the 68th minute, heading in a Ben White cross. Arsenal had 13 shots and 10 corners in the first half alone, and Everton’s best late chance, a header from Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, went just wide.
Fulham won 1-0 at Coventry City thanks to a late strike from Oscar Bobb. He weaved through a crowded box in the 80th minute and fired into the bottom corner. It was Fulham’s second league win in a row, and they now have eight points. Coventry had only 36% of the ball and managed just 0.5 expected goals. They sit 19th, one place above the bottom, and also lost defender Bobby Thomas to injury. Frank Lampard’s side face Sunderland next.
