Tresoldi Explains Why He Rejected Klopp’s Germany Call-Up

Germany under-21 striker Nicolo Tresoldi has explained why he said no to a senior call-up from Jurgen Klopp, as he remains torn between playing for Germany or Italy.

The 22-year-old says he is still undecided. Both Klopp and Italy boss Roberto Mancini have spoken to him personally, and both countries want him for the long term. For now, he is taking his time.

Tresoldi told German outlet ran how the first contact with the 59-year-old Klopp came about. "He sent me a message first and signed it off with 'Best wishes, Kloppo'. So I immediately knew who it was. After that, we texted and spoke on the phone. It was a really good conversation," he said.

He said Klopp was understanding about his doubts. "He understood it very well. We had a very good exchange. I hope I made a good impression. He is a great coach and also a great person. So I'm very grateful to him for the conversation and his support."

The striker admitted the whole thing left him on edge. "I was extremely nervous. I immediately told my parents, who were nervous as well. But in the end, it was simply a very good conversation."

Klopp is not the only big name trying to win him over. Germany sporting director Rudi Voller has also been in touch.

Tresoldi said: "We've spoken several times. He understands my situation very well because he played in Italy for a long time himself and knows both countries. He knows that this decision isn't easy. For me, it's something special to be able to speak to someone like him. When strikers of that calibre talk to you, it means something."

Mancini has made his own pitch too. "Yes, he contacted me too. It was a similar situation. For me, it's something special when two such successful coaches take the time to speak to me. It shows me that I'm on the right track. I'm very grateful to both of them for that. Everything else will become clear in time," Tresoldi said.

For now, his focus is on the Germany under-21s, who face Georgia on Tuesday night in their final Euro qualifier. He has already helped them win both of their games in this window, and one more result would send them to the finals.

A final decision on his senior future will only come once his youth duties are over and his club season picks up more speed.
