Bernardo Silva Joins Real Madrid on a Free Transfer

Bernardo Silva has signed for Real Madrid on a free transfer after his contract at Manchester City ran out at the end of last season. The 31-year-old has agreed a two-year deal, bringing his nine years at City to a close.

Silva turned down offers from Barcelona and Atletico Madrid to make the move to Real instead. He becomes the second senior signing of the summer for Real Madrid since the return of manager Jose Mourinho, following the £51.8m deal that brought left-back Marc Cucurella from Chelsea. Real have also handed centre-back Antonio Rudiger a new contract.

More moves look set to follow. Real are also working on a deal for Inter Milan's Denzel Dumfries, reported to be worth around £17m, and a free transfer for Liverpool's Ibrahima Konate, whose contract there is due to expire at the end of the month. Both are expected to be confirmed soon.

Cucurella's switch to Real has its own backstory. Chelsea paid Brighton £63m for him four years ago, and he went on to make 163 appearances for the club, winning the Conference League and the Club World Cup. Several clubs wanted him this summer, including a possible return to Barcelona, plus interest from Atletico Madrid and Manchester City, but he chose Real Madrid. That move is separate from talk of midfielder Enzo Fernandez also joining Real, something Fernandez said in April he would be open to.

Taken together, the signings point to a change of approach at Real Madrid. In recent years the club had leaned toward young players with potential, but Cucurella is the first player over 25 that Real have paid more than £2m for since they signed Eden Hazard from Chelsea for well over £100m back in 2019. Real have brought in older, experienced players since then, but always on free transfers, players like Rudiger, David Alaba, Kylian Mbappe and Trent Alexander-Arnold. Silva and Konate now follow that same pattern.

The numbers back up the shift. Last summer's new arrivals at Real, Dean Huijsen, Alvaro Carreras, Franco Mastantuono and Trent Alexander-Arnold, averaged just over 21 years old. This summer's signings so far are averaging close to 29. With Real having gone two seasons without winning LaLiga or the Champions League, the pressure on Mourinho and his squad appears to have pushed the club toward more proven, experienced players rather than gambling on potential.

Real Madrid's recently re-elected president, Florentino Perez, promised a major signing during his campaign, and none of the four deals completed or in progress so far really fit that description, so further moves may still be coming.

As for Silva himself, he leaves City with 76 goals in 460 appearances since joining from Monaco in 2017, and a trophy cabinet that includes six Premier League titles and one Champions League among 16 major honours. He captained the side in his final season, playing every minute of City's 38 league games as they finished second, though they did pick up the Carabao Cup and FA Cup along the way.

For now, Silva's focus is elsewhere. He is away with Portugal at the World Cup and is set to start their opening Group K game against DR Congo on Wednesday evening.
