Ogunbote Admits Plateau United Still Lacking Chemistry After Comeback Win
Plateau United head coach Gbenga Ogunbote has broken down how his side fought back from behind to beat visiting Shooting Stars of Ibadan on Sunday, a game that swung heavily in the second half.
Shooting Stars had taken an early lead through Abubakar Taheer in the 15th minute, and it took until five minutes into the second half for Plateau United to find a way back into the game through Jibril Ibrahimi. Seiyefa Jackson then put the hosts ahead for the first time in the 71st minute. Shooting Stars' afternoon got even worse in the 84th minute when Gbolagade Adelowo was shown a straight red card, and Plateau United made the extra man count almost immediately, with Gideon Monday adding a third just three minutes later.
Speaking after the match, Ogunbote gave credit to Shooting Stars for the problems they caused in the opening period, pointing to their continental experience.
"No disrespect to them, forget about the scoreline, they are a good side. When you're playing against a team that has played on the continent you should expect some quality in that team which we actually saw."
He was honest, too, about where his own side fell short before the break.
"We were a little careless in the first half and not tactically disciplined. For a team that play a unit defence, they have three centre-back so all we need to do is what I told them in the second half. So you can only break the defence before you think of scoring."
Ogunbote also touched on the makeup of his squad, admitting the team is still finding its rhythm after a summer of heavy turnover.
"The synergy has not really come. If you look at the game we had about seven or eight new players. But as the game goes the understanding will be better and I can assure you that we have a team but we are still trying to study ourselves so that we will have a perfect synergy."
