Bayern Confirm Kompany Hospitalised After Training Ground Collapse
Bayern Munich have confirmed that head coach Vincent Kompany collapsed during a training session on Friday and is now in hospital undergoing tests.
The club said Kompany was watching the reserve team train when he needed medical attention.
Reports say he was flown out by helicopter, though his condition is now described as stable. Bayern's statement said: "Vincent Kompany required medical attention after collapsing during an FC Bayern reserve team training session on Friday. The first-team head coach was watching the second string's session. Kompany is undergoing thorough examinations in hospital and will remain under medical care. His coaching staff will oversee training and match activities until further notice."
Sporting director Max Eberl said the club will not rush him back. "Vincent Kompany's health is our top priority. We at FC Bayern will do everything we can to ensure he makes a speedy recovery. Vinnie is receiving all the necessary medical care and support, and all the time he needs. His coaching team, in whom we have complete confidence, will take over his duties. All of us at FC Bayern wish Vinnie a speedy recovery," he said.
Doctors are expected to run a series of tests to find out what caused the collapse and to check for any lingering effects of the virus he caught earlier this month.
Kompany has been unwell for several days. After Bayern's 6-1 win over RB Leipzig, he missed the post-match interviews because of how he was feeling, and assistant coach Aaron Danks took the press conferences. Danks said the 40-year-old was dealing with heavy tiredness and pain in his legs from the infection.
After Wednesday's draw with Arsenal, Kompany admitted he had pushed himself too hard.
"As a trainer you always want to do everything and do everything. I got a pretty juicy virus last week, so of course I didn't listen to my body and then at some point the body said: Now stop!" he said.
For now, his assistants will run the first team. They face a tricky Bundesliga trip to SC Freiburg on Sunday, and the club says nobody will pressure Kompany to come back early.
