Luis Diaz Plays Down Injury Fears as Bayern Await Fitness Update
Bayern Munich are worried about the fitness of Luis Diaz after the winger went off injured late in their 2-2 Champions League draw with Arsenal, though the player says it is "nothing serious."
Diaz started on the bench and came on in the 68th minute for Ismael Saibari, as coach Vincent Kompany went looking for a winner. He did not last the game. He was taken off in the 90th minute after sitting on the turf and signalling to the medical staff that he could not carry on because of muscle trouble. He looked frustrated as he left the pitch.
The 29-year-old later calmed things down. Speaking to Sky Sport, he said the problem is nothing serious and that he expects to be back after a few days of rest. He was also seen walking out of the stadium on his own, looking calm and upbeat.
Kompany was a bit less relaxed. He told DAZN he had barely spoken to the player after the game, and that the fact it has happened twice is what worries him.
"The communication was not such that we spoke for a long time. I hope it's not bad. But when it happens for the second time, you're always a bit worried," he said.
Diaz was not fully fit going into the game. Before kick-off, Kompany said the winger had missed parts of training but was keen to be involved.
"He didn't train 100 per cent, but said this morning 'Coach, I want to be there and I'd like to play'. It's a good thing for us that he can be there on the bench. He can play a role and will probably play a role if he feels good during the warm-up," the coach said.
That makes the decision to use him a talking point, since he could not finish the game. Bayern now have to wait and see how he reacts to treatment over the next couple of days. The club's medical team will probably run more scans to make sure there is no lasting damage.
It could be a real blow if he misses time. Bayern are in a busy spell, with the Bundesliga title race heating up and more European games coming, and their options out wide would be tested without him. They next play Freiburg in the Bundesliga on Sunday.
